Simranjot Singh Sandhu International Drug Smuggler arrested
The Punjab Police, in a remarkable collaboration with a central agency, has successfully apprehended Simranjot Singh Sandhu, an international drug smuggler and the mastermind behind the notorious 487 kg cocaine smuggling case in Germany in 2020.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced this significant development on Saturday, marking a substantial victory in the ongoing battle against international drug trafficking.
Simranjot Singh Sandhu, aged 30, has been a key figure in a vast international drug cartel. His arrest comes as a result of meticulous investigations into the activities of drug smugglers Beant Singh and Sukhdeep Singh, who were apprehended on June 16, leading to the seizure of 1 kg of heroin.
The statements provided by these individuals enabled the Moga police to nominate Mandeep Singh, currently residing in the USA, and Simranjot Singh, who was allegedly seeking heroin buyers in Punjab under Mandeep’s directives.
DGP Gaurav Yadav highlighted that Simranjot Sandhu is wanted in Germany for multiple drug-related offenses. Preliminary investigations have revealed his significant involvement in smuggling drugs into India and various European countries.
The Inspector General of Police (Headquarters) Dr. Sukhchain Singh Gill, along with Faridkot range DIG Ashwani Kapur and Moga SSP Dr. Ankur Gupta, shared these details at a press conference. They confirmed that the Moga police had arrested Sandhu, a native of Gokhuwal village in Batala, from Bhaloor village in Moga.
Sandhu’s criminal journey began in Germany, where he moved in 2002 and worked as a taxi driver. Between March 2020 and June 2020, he was involved in storing and transporting at least 487 kg of cocaine, 66 kg of marijuana, and 10 kg of hashish, which had arrived at Hamburg port from Brazil and other South American countries.
He used encrypted mobile applications like Encrochat to communicate and coordinate his illegal activities. Despite being sentenced to 8.5 years in prison under the Narcotic Drugs Act by a German court on February 28, 2022, Sandhu managed to flee to Dubai in July 2023 and later entered India in September 2023.
For the past 11 months, Simranjot Sandhu had been evading arrest by constantly changing his locations within India. He stayed in various places, including Amritsar, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and Moga.
The police are currently investigating his activities in India to uncover any further connections and operations. An FIR was registered against him in Ajitwal Police Station (Moga) under Section 21 of the NDPS Act on June 16.
The arrest of Simranjot Singh Sandhu by the Punjab Police, in collaboration with a central agency, is a testament to the relentless efforts of law enforcement agencies to dismantle international drug trafficking networks. This operation not only brings a notorious criminal to justice but also sends a strong message to other criminals involved in such illicit activities.
