In an impressive feat, six educational institutions from Punjab have secured places among the top 100 in the overall category of the National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) 2024. The rankings, released by the Union Ministry of Education, spotlight both government and private universities from the region. Notably, Chandigarh University in Mohali, a private institution, has emerged as the highest-ranked university from Punjab, placing 32nd overall. This article delves into the specifics of these rankings and what they mean for Punjab’s higher education landscape.

The National Institutional Rankings Framework (NIRF) has once again brought attention to the quality of higher education in Punjab. With six institutions making it to the top 100, including three government-owned universities, the state’s educational standards are clearly on the rise. This year, private universities have outshined their government counterparts, taking the top three ranks in Punjab.

Chandigarh University, Mohali has set a new benchmark by securing the 32nd position in the overall category of the NIRF 2024 rankings. Owned by Satnam Singh Sandhu, a notable educationist and recent Rajya Sabha nominee, the university has demonstrated exceptional performance across various parameters. This achievement highlights the university’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and outreach.

In 2023, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar held the top spot from Punjab at 33rd overall. However, this year, it has slipped to 48th position, marking a 15-rank decline. Despite this drop, IIT Ropar remains a significant player in the national education arena, renowned for its engineering and technology programs.

Securing the second spot among Punjab’s top universities, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology in Patiala, a deemed-to-be university, is ranked 43rd overall. Known for its robust engineering courses and research initiatives, Thapar Institute continues to uphold its reputation for quality education and innovation.

Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara has achieved the 45th rank overall, showcasing its steady rise in the educational sector. Founded by Ashok Mittal, who was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Aam Aadmi Party, LPU’s focus on inclusivity, diverse programs, and global outreach has paid off, placing it among the top institutions in the country.

Among the government institutions, Indian Institute of Science and Research (IISER), Mohali and Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana have made notable appearances in the top 100, ranked 64th and 80th respectively. These rankings reflect their significant contributions to scientific research and agricultural advancements.

IISER Mohali‘s 64th rank underscores its role as a premier institute dedicated to scientific research and education. With a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research and innovative teaching methods, IISER Mohali continues to attract some of the brightest minds in the country.

Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, ranked 80th overall, is a testament to its pioneering work in agricultural education and research. As a key player in the Green Revolution, PAU’s contributions to sustainable agriculture and food security are invaluable.

121 NIRF 2024

The NIRF evaluates institutions based on five broad groups of parameters:

  • Teaching, Learning, and Resources (TLR)
  • Research and Professional Practice (RP)
  • Graduation Outcomes (GO)
  • Outreach and Inclusivity (OI)
  • Perception (PR)

These parameters collectively provide a comprehensive assessment of an institution’s performance, guiding students and stakeholders in making informed decisions.

The TLR parameter assesses the quality of teaching, learning resources, and infrastructure. Institutions with state-of-the-art facilities, competent faculty, and conducive learning environments score high in this category.

RP evaluates the impact and quality of research conducted by the institution. Metrics such as research publications, patents, and consultancy projects are considered, highlighting the institution’s contribution to knowledge creation and professional practice.

GO measures the success of students in terms of graduation rates, employability, and higher education placements. High scores in this category indicate effective educational practices and strong industry linkages.

OI looks at the inclusiveness of the institution, considering factors such as diversity of students, scholarships, and outreach programs. Institutions promoting accessibility and inclusivity tend to perform well in this parameter.

Perception reflects the overall reputation of the institution among peers, employers, and the public. A positive perception is often built on consistent performance and impactful contributions to society.

The 2024 NIRF rankings highlight a dynamic shift in Punjab’s higher education landscape. Private universities have made significant strides, often surpassing their government counterparts in various performance metrics. This trend underscores the growing importance of private investment in education and the potential for innovative educational models.

The presence of six institutions from Punjab in the top 100 is a promising sign for the state’s educational future. Continued emphasis on quality teaching, cutting-edge research, and inclusive practices will be crucial in maintaining and improving these rankings. As these institutions evolve, they will play a pivotal role in shaping the educational and economic landscape of Punjab and beyond.
