2016 Nabha Jail Break Mastermind Ramanjit Singh Alias Romi Extradited to India from Hong Kong

In a significant development in the 2016 Nabha Jail break case, Ramanjit Singh, also known as Romi, the main conspirator behind the notorious incident, has been successfully extradited to India from Hong Kong. This marks a major victory for the Punjab Police and the various central agencies that have worked tirelessly over the years to bring him to justice.

Ramanjit Singh, who is known for his links to the ISI and his association with the Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF), was one of the key figures behind the escape of several high-profile prisoners from Nabha jail, including Harminder Singh Mintu and Kashmir Singh Galwadi. His capture and extradition represent a critical step in dismantling the network of militants and criminals involved in the incident.

The efforts to bring Romi back to India began shortly after the daring jailbreak in 2016. Recognizing his role as the mastermind behind the operation, the Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) and a Red Corner Notice (RCN) against him. These measures were crucial in tracking his movements and preventing his escape to other countries.

In 2018, the process for his extradition was formally initiated under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with the Hong Kong government. This complex and lengthy process involved extensive legal work, including the submission of strong representations before the Hong Kong Department of Justice and the Hon’ble Courts. The extradition faced several legal challenges, but the consistent efforts of the Indian authorities eventually led to a breakthrough.

The successful extradition of Ramanjit Singh alias Romi is a testament to the effective international cooperation between India and Hong Kong. The Anti Gangster Task Force Punjab (AGTF), in collaboration with central agencies such as the CBI, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, played a pivotal role in coordinating the complex logistics of bringing Romi back to India. Their concerted efforts ensured that all legal protocols were meticulously followed, leading to a successful outcome.

The Punjab Police has expressed its gratitude to the Hong Kong authorities and all other agencies involved in this operation. The extradition is seen as a major achievement in the ongoing efforts to combat organized crime and militancy in the region.

Ramanjit Singh alias Romi was brought to Nabha today at 3 AM under heavy security. Upon his arrival, he was immediately presented before the duty magistrate of Nabha. Given the gravity of his offenses, the court has sent him to the new district jail of Nabha under judicial custody for 14 days. Prior to his incarceration, Romi underwent a medical examination at the government hospital in Nabha to ensure his fitness for detention.

This development is expected to provide new insights into the 2016 jailbreak case and potentially lead to further arrests and investigations. The Punjab Police remains committed to bringing all those involved in the incident to justice and ensuring that such a breach of security is never repeated.

The extradition of Ramanjit Singh alias Romi is a significant milestone in the fight against terrorism and organized crime in Punjab. It sends a strong message that the Indian government, with the support of international partners, will not rest until justice is served. The Punjab Police and central agencies continue to work on dismantling the networks that support such criminal activities and ensuring the safety and security of the region.

As Romi faces the Indian judicial system, the families of those affected by the Nabha jailbreak and the people of Punjab can hope that justice will be served, and that such acts of terror and defiance against the state will be met with the full force of the law.
