Amritsar Crime, man gets Court Awards Capital Punishment for daughter rape murder

In a case that has left a community reeling, a local court on Thursday handed down the most severe of sentences—capital punishment—to Partap Singh, a 36-year-old man from Lakhuwal village in the Baba Bakala subdivision. Singh was found guilty of the heinous crime of raping and murdering his six-year-old daughter, an act that shocked the nation with its brutality and sheer disregard for humanity. The court’s decision, delivered by Additional District and Sessions Judge Triptjot Kaur, also included a fine of ₹1.5 lakh, reflecting the gravity of the offenses committed.

The crime occurred on the intervening night of January 4 and 5, 2020, when Singh, under the influence of drugs, committed an unspeakable act against his own daughter. The victim was the eldest of three siblings and had been living with her mother, Ramanjit Kaur, at her maternal grandparents’ home due to a marital dispute. On January 4, Singh forcibly took his daughter with him, as he had done on previous occasions, under the pretext of a routine visit. However, unlike other times, he did not return her to her mother that evening.

In the dead of night, Singh raped and then murdered the innocent child, hanging her lifeless body from a tree on the bank of a canal near Rayya town. The following morning, in a display of twisted bravado, he informed his wife of his gruesome act and dared her to take action against him.

The case was swiftly taken up by the authorities, with a formal complaint lodged by Ramanjit Kaur at the Khilchian police station on January 5, 2020. The medical examination confirmed the horrific details, leaving no doubt about the nature of the crime. Singh was charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for murder and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, which deals with aggravated penetrative sexual assault.

During the trial, the defense counsel, Amandeep Singh Bajwa, attempted to argue for leniency, but the evidence against Singh was overwhelming. Judge Triptjot Kaur, in her judgment, emphasized the cold-blooded and premeditated nature of the crime, stating that it warranted the harshest possible punishment. She disagreed with the defense’s arguments and ruled that the crimes committed by Singh were beyond redemption.

Singh was sentenced to death under Section 302 of the IPC and received an additional life sentence under Section 6 of the POCSO Act. The court also imposed a financial penalty, fining Singh ₹1 lakh for the murder and ₹50,000 for the sexual assault, with both sentences to run concurrently.

This case serves as a grim reminder of the deep-seated issues of domestic violence, substance abuse, and the vulnerability of children within their own families. The brutality of Singh’s actions has raised serious questions about the safety of children in environments where they should feel the most secure—within their own homes.

The court’s decision to award capital punishment in this case is seen by many as a necessary deterrent against such heinous crimes, particularly those involving minors. It reflects the judiciary’s commitment to upholding justice and protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

While the verdict brings a sense of closure to the victim’s family and serves as a stern warning to others, it also highlights the need for broader societal changes. Issues such as drug addiction, domestic violence, and child protection require urgent attention from both the government and civil society. Comprehensive measures, including awareness campaigns, stronger enforcement of existing laws, and better support systems for vulnerable families, are essential to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Moreover, the case underscores the importance of fast-track courts, like the POCSO court in this instance, in dealing with crimes against children. The prompt and decisive action taken by the judiciary in this case sets a precedent and sends a clear message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated.

As the dust settles on this heartbreaking case, it is imperative that society reflects on the underlying causes that led to such a tragedy. Justice has been served in the eyes of the law, but true justice can only be achieved when every child is safe from harm, and when the most vulnerable are protected from those who seek to exploit or harm them.

This case should serve as a catalyst for change, prompting reforms that address the root causes of violence and ensure that no other child suffers a similar fate. As we mourn the loss of an innocent life, let us also commit to building a safer, more just society where such horrors are a thing of the past.
