JP Nadda Commits to Fertilizer Supply for Punjab’s Needs
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming Rabi season, Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister JP Nadda has assured that the Central Government will supply Punjab with the necessary quantities of fertilizers over the next two months, as per the state’s demands. The assurance was given during a meeting in New Delhi, where KAP Sinha, Punjab’s Special Chief Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, discussed the current shortfall in the supply of Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP), a critical chemical fertilizer for the state.
Addressing Punjab Fertilizer Requirements, During the meeting, Sinha highlighted Punjab’s pressing need for adequate DAP supplies, noting that the state plans to sow wheat across approximately 35 lakh hectares. To support this, Punjab will require around 5.50 lakh metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer. Sinha emphasized that the shortfall in this month’s allocation of DAP from the Centre could impact the timely sowing of wheat, which is vital for the state’s agricultural productivity.
In response, Minister JP Nadda reassured that Punjab would receive sufficient quantities of DAP and other essential fertilizers to meet the demands of the advancing Rabi season. This assurance is expected to alleviate concerns among farmers and state officials, who have been anxious about the adequacy of fertilizer supplies as the sowing season approaches.
Allocation of Fertilizers for Rabi Season 2024-25, The Central Government has allocated a total of 4.50 lakh metric tonnes of DAP fertilizer to Punjab for the 2024-25 Rabi season. Additionally, the state will receive 1.50 lakh metric tonnes of NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium) and 1.50 lakh metric tonnes of SSP (Single Super Phosphate) fertilizers. These allocations are critical to ensuring that Punjab’s farmers have access to the nutrients necessary for a successful harvest.
Fruitful Discussions with Central Authorities, The meeting between Punjab’s agriculture officials and the Union Minister was described as fruitful, with both sides expressing optimism about the upcoming agricultural season. The Punjab delegation, which included senior officials from the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department and Markfed, a state-run cooperative organization, also met with Rajat Kumar Mishra, Union Secretary of Chemicals and Fertilizers, to further discuss the state’s requirements.
This development underscores the importance of collaboration between state and central governments in addressing agricultural needs, particularly during crucial sowing periods. With the assurance of adequate fertilizer supplies, Punjab is poised to embark on the Rabi season with renewed confidence, ensuring that its farmers have the necessary resources to sustain their livelihoods and contribute to the state’s food security.
