BFUHS Caught in Legal Crossfire: Punjab and Haryana High Court Stay Halts NRI Quota Results
Chandigarh — The Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) announced on Thursday that the provisional results for the allotment of seats and colleges under the NRI category for NEET UG-2024 have been temporarily withheld. This decision comes in response to the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s interim orders staying the corrigendum dated August 20 and the addendum dated August 22, which had modified the admission criteria for MBBS and BDS courses under the NRI quota.
The BFUHS notice emphasized that the provisional results had been prepared but will remain on hold pending further judicial review. The next hearing of this case is to be held on September 2.
The controversy arose on August 20, when BFUHS, following an order from the Department of Medical Education and Research (DMER), amended the provisions for NRI quota admissions. The new rules allowed the nearest relatives of NRIs to be considered under this category if NRI seats remained vacant after admitting “real” NRIs. This modification sparked legal challenges, with petitioners arguing that the state government unlawfully altered the admission criteria after the submission of applications.
Earlier this week, BFUHS had released a provisional merit list of 66 candidates identified as “real NRI” and a separate list of 54 candidates who are Indian citizens but sponsored by NRI relatives. Punjab’s medical and dental colleges offer approximately 185 MBBS and 196 BDS seats under the NRI quota, but many of these seats often remain unfilled due to a lack of eligible candidates. The fees for these courses are set at $110,000 for an MBBS seat and $44,000 for a BDS seat.
The high court’s stay has created uncertainty in the admission process, leaving both institutions and candidates in a state of limbo as they await the court’s final decision.
