Punjab Fever Surveys as Punjab Dengue and Chikungunya Cases Surge
Chandigarh, Punjab – With a dramatic surge in dengue cases across the state, the Punjab Health Department has announced immediate measures to curb the spread of vector-borne diseases, including fever surveys and extensive fogging operations. Dengue cases have spiked by over 127%, with 369 cases reported by August 31, compared to just 162 by June 30.
Hoshiarpur has been the hardest-hit district, accounting for nearly 20% of the state’s total dengue cases, with 72 individuals testing positive. Mohali and Ludhiana follow closely behind, reporting 51 and 46 cases, respectively. Chikungunya, another concerning vector-borne disease, has seen 55 reported cases across the state, with Kapurthala (17) and Moga (14) being the most affected districts.
Health Department Takes Action
In response to the alarming rise in both dengue and chikungunya cases, the Director of Health Services has issued directives to all civil surgeons, instructing them to take immediate preventive measures. Key actions include:
- Fever Surveys: When a dengue case is reported, a fever survey will be conducted in the affected area to identify additional cases.
- Fogging Operations: Fogging will be carried out in 100-200 houses around the area of the reported case.
- Breeding Checks: Door-to-door inspections will be conducted to identify and destroy larvae of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue and chikungunya.
- Collaboration with Local Bodies: Local bodies, along with rural development and panchayat departments, have been instructed to ramp up fogging and other preventive measures.
Resident welfare associations will be involved in raising awareness in the affected areas. To ensure compliance and effective tracking, health survey teams will collect the names and contact details of all homeowners during inspections. This information will be shared with civil surgeons and district epidemiologists for cross-verification.
The health department’s swift action aims to contain the rising number of cases and prevent further outbreaks as the state grapples with its worst dengue and chikungunya season in years.
