CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s 300 Units Free Electricity Scheme
In 2022, when Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann took office, a pressing question on the minds of more than 3 crore people of Punjab was whether the new government would implement its promise of providing 300 units of free electricity. On April 16, just weeks after coming to power, CM Mann made a landmark announcement, delivering on a key election promise and implementing the much-anticipated 300 units of free electricity for households starting July 1, 2022.
Under this scheme, households in Punjab receive 300 units of free electricity per month, equating to a total of 600 units bimonthly. This initiative offers significant financial relief, as many families no longer have to worry about hefty electricity bills. For households that consume less than 300 units per month, the government entirely subsidizes their electricity usage, creating a direct benefit for roughly 90% of homes across the state.
For the financial year 2023-24, the Punjab government has allocated a subsidy benefit of ₹5590.40 crore to sustain the scheme. Moreover, an additional subsidy of ₹3 per unit is being provided to domestic consumers using up to 7KW, adding ₹1643.42 crore in subsidies for the same fiscal year.
With the implementation of this scheme, the financial burden on Punjab’s households has been greatly reduced, especially given the region’s intense heat and high electricity demand during the summer. The 90% of households that reported receiving zero electricity bills under this initiative have praised the government for improving their quality of life. This move has resonated deeply with the people of Punjab, as families have long struggled with rising energy costs.
The Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd (PSPCL) has benefited significantly from the timely payment of power subsidies, helping the company remain financially stable while providing cost-effective electricity to consumers. Despite the significant financial outlay to support the free electricity scheme, PSPCL registered an impressive profit of ₹804.94 crore for the financial year 2023-24.
This success can be attributed to proactive measures taken by PSPCL to control its power purchase expenses, which has ensured a reliable supply of electricity at lower costs. Additionally, the Punjab Government’s release of ₹18276.74 crore in subsidies to PSPCL as of December 2023, along with ₹20,200 crore in subsidies for the previous fiscal year (2022-23), played a crucial role in enhancing PSPCL’s revenue growth and overall financial health.
This initiative represents a significant milestone in Punjab’s governance. For over 20 years, residents have faced high electricity bills, putting a strain on household budgets. The Mann-led government’s decision to introduce the 300 units free electricity scheme has not only brought immediate relief but has also addressed a long-standing issue affecting millions of people.
As Punjab continues to reap the benefits of this forward-thinking initiative, the government and PSPCL remain committed to maintaining a cost-efficient and reliable power supply. This scheme is set to have long-term benefits, alleviating financial pressures on families and enabling more inclusive growth across the state.
The Punjab Government’s 300 units free electricity scheme, launched under the leadership of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann, has transformed the state’s energy landscape, offering relief to millions while ensuring the financial stability of PSPCL.
