Vinesh Phogat Files Nomination for Haryana Polls; Congress Optimistic
Wrestler-turned-politician and Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat officially entered the political race by filing her nomination for the Haryana Assembly elections from the Julana constituency in Jind district on Wednesday. The nomination comes just a day before the deadline for filing candidacies for the upcoming state elections.
Phogat was accompanied by prominent Congress leaders, including Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Sonipat MP Satpal Brahmachari, as she submitted her nomination papers. The Congress party is projecting Phogat’s candidacy as a significant boost to its campaign in the Jat-dominated Julana constituency.
After filing the nomination, Deepender Hooda expressed confidence in Phogat’s electoral prospects. “Vinesh Phogat is poised to secure a significant victory for Congress in Julana, and we are confident that we will achieve an absolute majority in the Haryana Assembly under the leadership of Bhupinder Singh Hooda,” Hooda said. He further added that the people of Haryana have decided to oust the BJP and bring Congress to power.
Phogat’s nomination has set the stage for a high-stakes contest in Julana, with the BJP fielding Yogesh Bairagi, a former commercial pilot, against her. Though Phogat hails from Balali in Charkhi Dadri district, her in-laws’ native village, Bakhta Khera, is located in Julana, strengthening her local connection to the constituency.
Thursday marks the final day for filing nominations ahead of the Haryana Assembly polls scheduled for next month. With the elections fast approaching, the contest between Phogat and Bairagi is expected to draw considerable attention, particularly in the Jat-dominated regions of the state.
Bhupinder Singh Hooda, a former Chief Minister, is being viewed as a key figure in leading the Congress campaign across Haryana, with his influence expected to sway crucial constituencies like Julana.
Phogat, an Olympian wrestler who has brought national and international acclaim to India, now aims to make her mark in politics, building on her family’s longstanding legacy in the wrestling and farming communities of Haryana.
The outcome of the elections in Julana will be closely watched, as it could play a pivotal role in determining the broader political landscape in Haryana.
