Arvind Kejriwal Resigns as Delhi CM; Atishi Named Successor
In a surprising political development, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation on Sunday, citing his commitment to serving with integrity. He declared that he would only return to the position once he receives a “certificate of integrity” from the public. Following his resignation, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has elected senior leader Atishi as the new Chief Minister of Delhi, marking a significant shift in the capital’s political landscape.
Kejriwal, who has led Delhi as Chief Minister since 2015, submitted his resignation to Lt. Governor VK Saxena on Tuesday evening at the LG’s office. His decision comes just days after being released from Tihar Jail in connection with a corruption case related to Delhi’s excise policy. During his announcement, Kejriwal expressed that he would push for early elections in the capital and pledged to focus on restoring his leadership role with the public’s backing.
Atishi, a long-time close ally of Kejriwal, was named his successor during a meeting of the Aam Aadmi Party’s legislative body. She expressed mixed emotions in her first statement as Delhi’s third woman Chief Minister, following in the footsteps of Sushma Swaraj from the BJP and Sheila Dixit from the Congress.
“On one side, there is happiness, but on the other side, there is sorrow. It is a sad moment that our popular Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is resigning,” Atishi remarked in her address.
Despite her new role, Atishi vowed to work towards a single goal—restoring Kejriwal to the position of Chief Minister. She further emphasized that she would continue to govern under his guidance, stating, “Kejriwal trusted me, made me MLA, then Minister, and now Chief Minister. I am grateful to him.”
Atishi, a former school reformer and AAP stalwart, comes from a modest background and has been a crucial figure in Kejriwal’s administration. She credited the AAP and Kejriwal for her rise in politics, noting that she may not have even been granted an election ticket had she been in a different political party.
Her rise to the position of Chief Minister solidifies her place as a key figure in Delhi politics and the broader national conversation. Atishi will now be responsible for managing the capital’s governance while facing the challenge of navigating through the political turmoil caused by Kejriwal’s resignation.
