BJP Chief Nadda Urges Punjab CM to Clear Ayushman Bharat Hospital Dues
BJP President J P Nadda has called on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to urgently clear the mounting dues of private hospitals in the state to restore cashless healthcare under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. On Friday, Nadda took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to urge Mann to address the issue, emphasizing that the current situation has deprived many economically disadvantaged families, including farmers, of free healthcare services.
In his statement, Nadda expressed, “I implore Bhagwant Mann to promptly settle the hospital dues, as numerous families, particularly our diligent farmers, are reaping benefits from the Ayushman Bharat programme. Rather than supporting the party faction in Delhi, CM Bhagwant Mann would do well to focus on Punjab’s declining situation.”
The Private Hospital and Nursing Home Association (PHANA) in Punjab has reportedly suspended cashless treatment under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) due to unpaid dues amounting to Rs 600 crore. Private hospitals, which are a critical part of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, have stopped providing free medical services to cardholders, creating significant challenges for economically weaker sections of the population.
According to PHANA, healthcare facilities will only resume participation in the scheme once the state government settles its outstanding payments.
Nadda, who is also the Union Health Minister, took a swipe at the Mann-led government, accusing it of mismanaging healthcare services in Punjab. He pointed out that despite promises made before the state elections to expand healthcare services, the Mann administration has failed to deliver on its commitments, particularly in terms of timely payments to private hospitals.
Ayushman Bharat is a scheme designed to offer medical coverage to economically disadvantaged families. However, due to the state government’s mismanagement, individuals have been deprived of free healthcare,” stated Nadda. He further questioned, “Why hasn’t Chief Minister Mann’s administration settled the debts with private hospitals?” Prior to the elections, there were promises of additional clinics and health centers, yet today, the government seems unable to advance the cause of the impoverished.”
The ongoing healthcare crisis in Punjab, marked by the suspension of cashless services, has put significant pressure on vulnerable communities, particularly farmers and low-income families who rely heavily on government-backed schemes like Ayushman Bharat. The Ayushman Bharat PMJAY was introduced to provide healthcare coverage to underprivileged families, ensuring they receive treatment without financial barriers.
With private hospitals suspending their participation, many people are left without access to necessary medical care, prompting increased criticism of the state government’s handling of the situation.
As the healthcare system in Punjab continues to face difficulties due to the unpaid dues, there is growing pressure on Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to take swift action and resolve the issue. BJP’s J P Nadda’s remarks highlight the urgency of clearing the backlog of payments to private hospitals, restoring access to crucial healthcare services for thousands of families under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
