Punjab Police Warn of Serious Threats to CM Bhagwant Mann from Radical Preacher Amritpal Singh
Chandigarh, September 22, 2024 — The Punjab police on Saturday raised alarming concerns over threats to the life of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, allegedly posed by radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and his associates. These claims were made in an affidavit submitted before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, which also flagged serious law and order issues in the state.
The affidavit references several video clips, purportedly recorded outside Ajnala police station, where Amritpal Singh is seen making inflammatory statements. In these clips, Singh is heard warning that CM Mann may meet the same fate as former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated in a suicide bombing in August 1995.
In one video, Amritpal Singh is heard saying, “We warned CM Mann not to follow the path of CM Beant Singh… yet, CM Mann continues on the same path. Dilawar acted as a human bomb and blew up Beant Singh… CM Mann has ensured that several such Dilawars have emerged from today’s crowd.”
The police have expressed concerns that such provocative remarks have the potential to mislead impressionable youth, inciting them into believing that assassinating a democratically elected leader could be seen as The affidavit underscored that Amritpal Singh and his associates represent a significant threat to public safety and the maintenance of law and order in Punjab.
The police affidavit also stated, “If Amritpal Singh were to continue promoting his radical ideology and act on it, a serious threat to public order and state security would arise.”
These alarming assertions were part of a detailed police response to petitions filed by two of Amritpal Singh’s associates, Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi and Gurmeet Singh Gill. The duo had challenged their recent detention orders, issued by the Punjab government under the National Security Act (NSA) in March 2024. The high court is currently reviewing the legality of these detention orders.
Beant Singh, the former Punjab Chief Minister, was assassinated in 1995 in a bombing at the state secretariat. His death marked a pivotal moment in Punjab’s violent insurgency, and the case remains a sensitive topic in the region’s politics. By comparing Bhagwant Mann to Beant Singh, Amritpal Singh is invoking a painful chapter in Punjab’s history, raising the stakes of his inflammatory rhetoric.
The situation is being closely monitored by state authorities, with the police urging caution as they anticipate further developments.
This article highlights the escalating tension surrounding radical preacher Amritpal Singh and the alleged threats to CM Bhagwant Mann, underscoring the potential for violence and disruption of public order in Punjab.
