Fugitive Amritpal Singh Deported from Austria to India to Face Heinous Criminal Charges
New Delhi, September 13, 2024 – In a significant breakthrough for law enforcement, Punjab Police, in coordination with central agencies, successfully deported fugitive Amritpal Singh from Austria to India. Singh, a resident of Bhoma village in Batala, was apprehended upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi at 7 am on Friday. He was immediately taken into custody by Batala Police to face numerous charges, including murder and drug-related offences.
Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav confirmed the news on social media platform X, stating, “After tireless efforts by @PunjabPoliceInd in coordination with central agencies, Amritpal Singh, resident of Village Bhoma, PS Ghuman, has been successfully deported from #Austria to #India to face charges in numerous serious criminal cases.” Yadav described the deportation as a crucial step toward securing justice for the victims of Singh’s crimes.
Amritpal Singh had been a proclaimed offender, evading Indian authorities since fleeing the country in 2022. He is accused of multiple heinous crimes, including murder, attempted murder, drug offences, and violations under the Arms Act. Punjab Police had been tracking Singh’s movements after he escaped to Austria via Dubai and Serbia. He had also applied for political asylum in Austria but was deported following cooperation between Indian and international authorities.
DGP Gaurav Yadav praised the dedicated efforts of the Batala Police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Suhail Qasim Mir, and the Internal Security Wing of Punjab Police. The teams worked relentlessly to secure Singh’s return to India to face the pending charges against him.
SSP Qasim Mir said that after continuous efforts and cooperation of international authorities, the Punjab Police had ensured his return to India to face justice, adding that Singh had been evading arrest since 2022.
Amritpal Singh’s deportation marks a significant victory in the ongoing efforts by Indian law enforcement to track down fugitives accused of serious criminal offences. The coordinated efforts between Punjab Police and central agencies underline the government’s commitment to ensuring justice, both for victims and for the rule of law.
The fugitive will now be presented in court, where he will face charges in several ongoing criminal cases.
The successful deportation of Amritpal Singh demonstrates the effectiveness of international cooperation in bringing fugitives to justice and highlights the ongoing commitment of Indian authorities to combat serious crime.
