Fazilka Court Sentences Three to Life for Murder of Punjab SI
Fazilka, Punjab – In a significant legal ruling, the Additional Sessions Judge of Fazilka, Ajit Pal Singh, has handed life sentences to three individuals—Namandeep Godara, Vikramjit, and Vijay Lakshmi—for the murder of Punjab Police Sub-Inspector Gurvinder Singh. The verdict, delivered today, marks the conclusion of a tragic case dating back to June 2020, when Sub-Inspector Singh was gunned down by assailants in his neighborhood in Basant Nagar, near Sitto Gunno Road.
Sub-Inspector Gurvinder Singh was shot dead by car-borne attackers in broad daylight, a crime that shocked the local community and law enforcement agencies. The murder investigation led to the arrest of Godara, Vikramjit, Vijay Lakshmi, and Naresh Kumar, who were charged under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act.
The court found Godara, Vikramjit, and Vijay Lakshmi guilty under various sections of the IPC, including charges of murder, conspiracy, and destruction of evidence, along with violations under the Arms Act. Each of the three convicts received a life sentence and a fine of ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two-year imprisonment.
In addition to the life sentence, the three convicts were also given three years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 201 of the IPC for tampering with evidence, and five years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 25 of the Arms Act. A fine of ₹10,000 was imposed for each of these charges, with non-payment resulting in an additional one-year imprisonment.
Naresh Kumar, the fourth accused, was sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 25 of the Arms Act. He was fined ₹10,000, and failure to pay will add another year to his sentence.
This ruling brings some closure to the family of Sub-Inspector Gurvinder Singh, who has been waiting for justice since his tragic death. The verdict is also seen as a strong message against those who commit violent crimes against law enforcement personnel, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law.
The sentencing of the four individuals underlines the seriousness of the crime and serves as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar offenses. Punjab Police officials have welcomed the judgment, expressing relief that justice has been served in this high-profile case.
The case has been closely followed, given the victim’s role in the police force and the nature of the crime. The court’s ruling is expected to set a precedent for handling such cases in the future, especially those involving attacks on public servants.
