Akali Dal and BJP’s strong rhetoric about the degradation of law and order
Leaders from various political parties harshly criticized the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government following a violent attack on an NRI in Amritsar. On Saturday, they expressed concerns over what they described as the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal pointed out that attacks in Amritsar on two consecutive days are clear signs of declining public safety in Punjab.
He asserted that Punjabis are not even safe in their own homes and called for Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to resign on moral grounds.
BJP leader Preneet Kaur echoed these sentiments, stating that such incidents demonstrate the lack of safety in Punjab and urging Mann to focus on improving law and order. Similarly, Punjab Congress chief and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring criticized the government’s incompetence, emphasizing that Punjab requires decisive action rather than mere statements. Congress leader and former minister Raj Kumar Verka also took aim at the Chief Minister over the rise in crime.
In response, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accused the SAD and BJP of politicizing the issue. AAP Punjab spokesperson Neel Garg highlighted that the family of the NRI claimed the attack was perpetrated by his ex-wife’s relatives, making it a personal dispute rather than a political matter. Garg mentioned that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to take strict action against those responsible.
He also reminded the public of a similar incident during the Badal government when an ASI was killed in Amritsar while defending his daughter. Garg further criticized the BJP for remaining silent on other recent issues, such as a shooting at an MLA in Haryana and the torture of a Dalit man in Uttar Pradesh for demanding his wages.
Garg argued that National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows Punjab’s law and order situation is actually better compared to BJP-ruled states and neighboring regions. He claimed the Opposition’s criticism is primarily aimed at tarnishing the government’s reputation. Meanwhile, Cabinet Ministers Harbhajan Singh ETO and Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal visited the hospital to check on the injured NRI, who doctors report is now in stable condition.
