NIA Raids Multiple Locations in Punjab Over Khalistani Protest Outside Indian High Commission in Canada
Punjab, September 13, 2024 – The National Investigation Agency (NIA) carried out a series of raids across multiple districts in Punjab on Friday, in connection with the March 2023 Khalistani protest outside the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, Canada. The raids, part of case RC-17/2023/NIA/DLI, were conducted in Moga, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Jalandhar, targeting the residences of relatives of Sikh separatist leader Amritpal Singh.
According to ANI, the NIA carried out raids at the homes of several family members of Amritpal Singh, including his uncle Pragat Singh and brother-in-law Amarjot Singh. Amritpal Singh, a 30-year-old leader of the Sikh separatist movement, was arrested in 2023 after reviving calls for an independent Sikh state in Punjab.
The operation began at Pragat Singh’s residence in the Baba Bakala subdivision, followed by similar raids at the homes of other relatives. These raids are part of a larger investigation into the activities of Khalistani supporters, particularly their involvement in unlawful protests outside Indian diplomatic offices.
The March 23, 2023, protest outside the Indian High Commission in Ottawa, led by Khalistani supporters, involved demonstrators chanting anti-India slogans and attaching Khalistani flags to the boundary wall of the High Commission. The protest escalated when a prominent member of the group threw two grenades onto the premises, as reported by ANI.
Amarjot Singh, brother-in-law of Amritpal Singh and one of the protest leaders, was among those named in the NIA’s case. The FIR related to the incident was initially filed in June 2023 by the NIA after the Delhi Police Special Cell had begun investigating the unlawful activities of the group.
The NIA raids come as part of broader efforts by the Indian government to crack down on pro-Khalistani elements in India and abroad. Amritpal Singh, who has been the face of the Khalistan movement in Punjab, remains at the center of these investigations, with law enforcement targeting his network of supporters and family members.
In related news, government sources have reported that pro-Khalistani elements were present during Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Virginia on September 12, 2024. Representatives from the Baba Makhan Shah Gurdwara in Richmond Hill, known for its involvement in anti-India protests, attended the event, sparking further concerns about the reach of the Khalistan movement abroad.
The NIA continues to investigate the activities of Khalistani supporters, with raids in Punjab marking a significant step in uncovering their connections to the Ottawa protest and other anti-India actions. As of now, the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests or developments are expected in the coming weeks.
The NIA recent actions highlight India’s efforts to confront separatist movements and bring those responsible for anti-India activities to justice, both domestically and internationally.
