Punjab Agricultural University KVK Organises Village-Level Camp on Paddy Residue Management in Thinda
Hoshiarpur, Punjab – Punjab Agricultural University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Bahowal, Hoshiarpur, recently organised a village-level awareness camp on paddy residue management at Thinda, its adopted village.
Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, the Associate Director of Training at KVK, highlighted the detrimental environmental impact of burning paddy residue and appealed to farmers to cease this practice to protect the environment. He notified the farmers that KVK Hoshiarpur will, like in past years, organize various campaigns on managing paddy residue. These initiatives will encompass awareness camps, training sessions, live demonstrations, billboards, wall paintings, and the dissemination of informative literature.
Dr. Bons also stressed the importance of custom hiring centers for the proper utilisation of paddy residue machinery. “Custom hiring and cooperative efforts are essential for managing paddy residue effectively,” he said. Such centers have already been established in the region to facilitate the availability of necessary machinery.
Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor of Agricultural Engineering, and Parminder Singh, Associate Professor of Animal Sciences, highlighted the nutrient-rich value of paddy residue. They advised farmers on ways to preserve these nutrients through effective management techniques.
Various in-situ and ex-situ technologies were discussed, offering alternative uses for paddy straw. These include mushroom cultivation, biogas production, biochar, mulch, fodder, and seasonal management for dairy animals.
Support for Farmers: On the occasion, farmers were provided with seeds of toria, vegetable seed kits, mineral mixtures, and uromin lick, along with educational literature to support sustainable farming practices.
This village-level camp is part of the ongoing efforts by KVK and Punjab Agricultural University to promote eco-friendly farming techniques in Punjab.
