Punjab Govt Agrees to Farmer Demands, Draft Policy Reviewed by Unions
Chandigarh — In a significant development, the Punjab government has agreed to send its 1,600-page draft Agriculture Policy to leaders of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) and the Punjab Khet Mazdoor Union for review by September 30, following marathon talks held today. The government has committed to fine-tuning the policy based on the feedback from these unions before its final implementation.
During the discussions, the government also conceded to several key demands from the unions, including the introduction of a One-Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for loans taken by farmers from Cooperative Banks. In a major step, the government has also agreed to conduct a survey on farmer and farm laborer suicides due to indebtedness since 2010 and compensate affected families.
Additionally, the unions’ demand to ensure that factories near Ludhiana’s Buddha Nullah discharge only treated water to prevent further environmental degradation has been accepted.
Though the talks were initially inconclusive, a government delegation led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann later made these offers, with further negotiations handled by Cabinet Ministers. The union leaders will now convene on Friday to discuss the government’s offer and decide their next steps.
Farmer leader Joginder Singh Ugrahan stated that while their protest was centered on the immediate implementation of the agriculture policy, they have succeeded in pushing the government to accept key demands, including compensation for weather-related crop losses.
Further decisions on the future course of action are expected after the unions’ meeting on Friday.
