RGPV Sports Complex Scam: ABVP Demands Action in 6 Days

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV) on Monday, accusing the administration of massive financial irregularities in the construction of the university’s sports complex. The protestors claimed that despite spending crores of rupees over the years, the sports complex remains incomplete.

The Allegations: ABVP members claimed that ₹16.50 crore was initially sanctioned for the construction of the sports complex in 2015. However, the estimated cost was later revised to Rs 19.16 crore in 2019.

The work was then assigned to the Capital Project Administration (CPA), which reported an expenditure of Rs 23.52 crore. Despite this escalation in costs, the construction remains unfinished, with only four out of the proposed six basketball courts completed.

Protest Highlights: The protest began with ABVP activists gathering at the university campus, shouting slogans and demanding accountability. They alleged that the funds meant for the project were mismanaged and that those responsible for the irregularities should be punished.

Following the demonstration, ABVP representatives submitted a memorandum to the university registrar, addressed to the Vice-Chancellor. They demanded strict action within six days against those involved in the financial mismanagement.

Demands and Threats: ABVP made it clear that failure to address their demands would lead to a phased agitation. They stressed that students and the general public have a right to know how public funds are utilized and why the construction is still incomplete despite the substantial financial allocation.

Historical Context: The sports complex project was initiated in 2015 with an aim to provide state-of-the-art facilities to students. However, repeated delays and cost escalations have marred the project. Students expressed frustration over the slow pace of work, with many pointing out that incomplete facilities hamper sports activities and events.

University’s Response: The university administration acknowledged receiving the memorandum and assured the protestors that an internal investigation would be launched to review the allegations. Officials also stated that steps would be taken to expedite the completion of the sports complex.

ABVP’s Next Steps: ABVP leaders declared that if their demands are not met within the stipulated time, they will intensify their protests in a phased manner, including sit-ins and hunger strikes. They emphasized that accountability and transparency are essential to restore trust in the administration.

Public Reaction: The protest has sparked debates among students, faculty, and local citizens. Many students supported ABVP’s stand, calling for timely action to complete the sports complex and investigate financial irregularities.

The allegations of financial mismanagement at RGPV have raised serious concerns about accountability in public-funded projects. As ABVP continues to press for action, all eyes are on the university administration to deliver a transparent investigation and ensure the completion of the sports complex.
