In a significant development raising concerns over agricultural standards and regional food distribution, recent consignments of rice grown in Punjab and shipped to Karnataka have been declared unfit for human consumption. The rejection comes on the heels of a similar incident where rice shipments from Punjab to Arunachal Pradesh were also deemed unfit, with some samples marked as “Beyond Rejection Limit.” This situation has sparked alarm among farmers, rice shelling units, and agricultural stakeholders in Punjab, with allegations of a targeted agenda to undermine Punjab’s rice industry.

The issue first came to light when rice samples from Punjab sent to Karnataka underwent quality testing. Out of these, several samples failed to meet the requisite standards, leading to a formal rejection. The Food Corporation of India (FCI) informed officials in Patiala and Jalandhar of this finding, directing them to replace the rejected rice stacks from the warehouses in Nabha and Bhogpur. Specifically, 7,304 bags (3,568.837 quintals) from Nabha and 2,995 bags (1,484.929 quintals) from Bhogpur were identified as unsuitable for distribution.

The recent incident follows a similar rejection from Arunachal Pradesh, where 26 samples of fortified rice were collected from storage depots and fair-price shops in the Hubbali region by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Of these, four samples were declared “Beyond Rejection Limit,” meaning they were not only substandard but potentially hazardous for public consumption. The rejection and subsequent directive for replacement have spurred concerns among Punjab’s farmers and rice millers, leading them to question the motives behind these actions.

Concerns Among Farmers and Rice Millers in Punjab
